Capito: Once Again Leadership Falls Short on FISA Modernization

Congresswoman Renews Call to Pass Bipartisan Senate Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Bill

March 14, 2008

WASHINGTONRep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today issued the following statement criticizing yet another flawed attempt by House Leadership to address FISA modernization:

“Once again we’ve been presented a proposal that falls short of the bipartisan Senate bill and fails to adequately address needed modernization of our intelligence community,” said Capito.

“House Republicans, Senate Democrats, and dozens of the Speaker’s fellow House Democrats have expressed their support for the Senate’s legislation and it seems clear that the bill would easily pass if presented to the House. Yet, Leadership continues to stonewall and refuses to bring the Senate bill up for a vote.  Their proposal is not only unacceptable, but it is dangerously misguided.”

“I believe that our intelligence community must have the tools and flexibility necessary to monitor terrorist communication and adapt to modern communications technology.  I call on the Speaker to listen to reason and bring the bipartisan Senate bill up for a vote.”
