MARTINSBURG – Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development division has approved a $7 million loan to fund the rebuilding of the Morgan County Courthouse in Berkeley Springs.
“This courthouse was a corner-stone of the historic community of Berkeley Springs,” said Capito, while also applauding the efforts of local leaders and development officials.
“For nearly two years I’ve worked closely with community leaders, the Morgan County Commission, Administrator Rice and his predecessor – Robert Steptoe – to seek out funding solutions for this incredibly important project. While the fire proved to be a devastating setback, this funding will provide the necessary resources to rebuild and start anew. This is excellent news for Morgan County and I’m excited to see this project move forward.”
The historic Morgan County Courthouse was completely destroyed by fire in August of 2006, and financing through the Community Facility Direct Loan program will provide financing for rebuilding.
In recent years, Capito has sought funding for the project through various avenues of federal support. The Rural Development loan will finalize the funding needs for the construction project.
