Immigration

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito believes that a strong immigration policy is important to our nation’s security and our economy. West Virginians understand that while we are a nation of immigrants, we are also nation of laws rooted in the Constitution.

Shelley opposes amnesty for individuals who are in the United States illegally and does not believe that these persons should be granted legal status. She strongly objects to the Obama administration’s attempts to bypass Congress in granting amnesty. Shelley has also cosponsored legislation that would ban illegal immigrants from collecting Social Security benefits and other social services.

Reforming our immigration laws must begin by protecting and securing our borders and strengthening our enforcement mechanisms. Before we address the backlog of immigrants already in the United States, we must first prevent people from continuing to enter our country illegally. Shelley voted for the Border Tunnel Prevention Act, a 2012 law that strengthened the penalties for construction of border tunnels and implemented harsh penalties for individuals who conspire to build or finance border tunnels.

Since her first term in Congress, Shelley has proudly supported E-Verify, a federal employee verification program that allows America’s small businesses to have confidence that their employees are legally eligible to work in the United States. Shelley will continue to support policies that ensure that illegal immigrations do not take millions of jobs from hardworking Americans, and she believes that employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants should be penalized.
