Defense and National Security
The United States of America is seen throughout the world as a beacon of freedom and democracy. The brave men and women of our military stand ready to defend our nation and its values, and supporting our troops is one of Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito’s greatest priorities.
As the daughter of a World War II veteran, Shelley has a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by all of our service members and their families. She has visited members of our armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as wounded warriors at military hospitals in Germany and stateside.
To support our troops, we must ensure that they have the equipment, supplies and support they need to successfully execute their missions. Shelley will continue to support fiscally responsible appropriations bills that provide for our troops.
Shelley has also been a strong supporter of our National Guard structure. Members of the West Virginia National Guard have served with great distinction in the wars with Iraq and Afghanistan and have come to the aid communities and individuals in West Virginia after major storms and the recent water crisis. She has worked to give the National Guard a stronger voice by supporting efforts to make the chief of the National Guard part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Shelley will continue to support West Virginia’s men and women in uniform – both in the active duty services and in the Guard and Reserve.
Shelley believes that the United States must maintain a strong military to protect our national security and America’s interests at home and abroad. Our strong partnership with our NATO allies helps advance freedom and democracy throughout the world. We are also proud to stand with Israel, our strongest ally in the Middle East, to foster peace and security in that vital region.
