CHARLESTON– Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today joined students in Elk View to recognize local service veterans as part Pinch Elementary School’s partnership with the History Channel’s Take a Veteran to School Day initiative.
“I am extremely honored to celebrate Veterans Day and honor West Virginia veterans with the students of Pinch Elementary,” said Capito. “It is incredibly important that we thank our veterans – young and old – for their self-less service. Not only do they epitomize the concept of civic duty, but they are true role models for these students.”
Pinch Elementary School participated in the Take a Veteran to School Day initiative created by the History Channel to link veterans of all ages with young people in schools and communities across America.
“From the greatest generation to the latest generation, our veterans deserve our recognition,” added Libby O’Connell, Senior Vice President of Corporate Outreach and Chief Historian at the History Channel. “Through the Take a Veteran to School campaign vets can share experiences that have shaped our world with today’s young people. We are so grateful to Congresswoman Capito for her support of this project.”
Students gathered this morning in an assembly where they had the opportunity to interact with a number of service veterans including Korean War veterans Cpl. Virgil Eagles and Cpl. Hoyt Newman and MSG. Jeff Fleming, a veteran who served in both Korea and Vietnam.
“We’re very excited to participate in Take a Veteran to School Day and are thankful for the support from our local veterans and from Congresswoman Capito,” said Betty Moore, Principal of Pinch Elementary School. “Our students can learn so much from our veterans and it’s great to bring them all together as we honor their service.”
In addition to its educational foundation, Take a Veteran to School Day also serves as a call to action for citizen support for our nation’s veterans.
