WASHINGTON – Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) released the following statement today after voting to oppose a budget proposal that would raise taxes by more than $683 billion dollars:
“Under this budget proposal, the average West Virginia family would see their tax bill rise by nearly $2,500 per year at a time when they’re already struggling with high gas prices and a slowing economy. Nearly 6 million low-income Americans who currently pay zero income tax would go back on the tax rolls and marginal tax rates would increase across the board.
“The speaker’s proposal would devastate job-creating small businesses, forcing them to shoulder an average tax hike of nearly $4,000. Why anyone would want to effectively reverse the economic stimulus package is beyond me, but that’s precisely what this budget would do.
“This budget would do irreparable harm to an economy that’s struggling, and I refuse to support such fiscal irresponsibility.”
