Letter from Shelley
Friends and Colleagues,

There is plenty of news this week regarding health care for veterans, the strength of our economy and help with prescription drug costs.
Boosting Care for Rural Veterans
The House began its work this week on appropriations (spending) bills to fund our government in 2008. During debate on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill, I was successful in attaching a measure that I believe will help improve health care and services for veterans living in West Virginia and other parts of rural America.
Deficit Continues to Fall
We received more good news this week regarding the federal deficit. The Treasury Department announced that the deficit has dropped 34 percent since this time last year.
The deficit is dropping because more money is coming into the government's coffers - even while we have cut taxes across the board. This is yet another example of how our economy grows and increases the tax base if the government keeps taxes low and allows people to keep more of their hard- earned money.
Extra Help with Rx Drug Costs
Social Security and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are working together to get Medicare beneficiaries extra help with the cost of prescription drugs. To learn more about whether you or someone you care about is eligible for this extra help, click here.
Sincerely,

Member of Congress
