E-News Update for June 29, 2007

Letter from Shelley

Friends and Colleagues,
offical photo lowres

Immigration was the big topic in Washington this week, and judging by the number of emails, letters, and phone calls I received, it was the big issue with those in West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District as well.

Senate Says No to Amnesty

The defeat of the Senate immigration bill this week was a victory for those who respect the rule of law and oppose amnesty.

I oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants, and was not in favor of the Senate bill. However, now that the Senate amnesty bill is all but dead, it doesn't mean there is not work to be done to stop illegal immigration. I am hopeful we can come together to implement meaningful immigration reform that secures our borders and provides employers with the tools they need to ensure their employees are in the country legally - all while not granting amnesty.

Immigration Reform Group Gives Capito an 'A'

Americans for Better Immigration recently announced their congressional report cards. As the Charleston Daily Mail explains, the group gives Capito A's on nearly every subject such as visa lottery, border control, and interior enforcement.

TRUTH WATCH: Dismantling Lies About Capito's Support for Veterans

It was announced this week that a partisan political group would begin airing negative radio ads against my record of supporting veterans. As one public watchdog group explained, these negative attacks are misleading and full of half-truths.

For the truth about my strong support for West Virginia's veterans, click here.

I am proud of my record of supporting veterans, and am saddened that professional politicians from Washington have already begun their negative and misleading attacks.

Sincerely,

Member of Congress

Berkeley County Teen Enjoys Presidential Classroom Experience

WASHINGTON, DC, June 27, 2007 – Congresswoman Capito met with John Snowden in her Capitol Hill office this week. John, a junior at Musselman High School in Bunker Hill, was in Washington as a participant in the Presidential Classroom Program. The program gives high schools students an up-close look at the federal government in an effort to help prepare our country's next generation of civic leaders.

IN THE NEWS: More Praise for Capito's Efforts to Provide Taxpayer Transparency

Transparency
Martinsburg Journal editorial
June 24, 2007

U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., should be applauded loudly for her decision to release in full her budget requests — known as earmarks on the federal level — for projects and programs in West Virginia.

Capito, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties, is one of the few representatives who has released this information. And this is the first year any such disclosures have been made.

“I am not anti-earmark, nor do I believe the word ‘earmark’ should be a dirty word. I do believe, however, that the earmarking process should be done in the most transparent way possible in order to allow taxpayers to hold their government accountable,” Capito said in a news release.
