Urging the young men and women of West Virginia to consider serving their country and attend one of the nation’s premier educational institutions, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., announced that she will host two local “Academy Days.”   The two meetings, held in Charleston, WV and Hedgesville, WV, will give young West Virginians an opportunity to learn about admissions to U.S. Service Academies: Air Force, Military (West Point), Naval, Merchant Marine and Coast Guard. 

“I consider making nominations to the Service Academies one of my most important responsibilities as a United States Congresswoman.   For students contemplating attending one of our nation’s first-rate military academies, the opportunity to meet directly with academy representatives is a critical first step in the process,”stated Capito.  “West Virginia has a long legacy of sending men and women to our nation’s military academies.  Attending one of these exceptional institutions is an outstanding educational opportunity for young West Virginians and their commitment to our country is an inspiration to others.”

Any middle school or high school student residing in the 2^nd Congressional District is invited to attend.  Similar to college fairs, Academy Days are a recruiting tool for the military academies to send representatives to addressinterested students regarding their particular academy. 

Representatives from the Air Force, Army, Naval, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Academies will be in attendance to describe opportunities at the U.S. Service Academies and answer questions from prospective students and their parents. Interested candidates receive information on the advantages of U.S. service academies as well as receive guidance in the nomination and appointment process.  A representative of a local ROTC program will answer questions about the ROTC Scholarship at both events and Larry Mullen, of the Department of Defense’s Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) will attend the September 30, 2012 event.
